Obviously, we tend to get a LOT of scrap and small pieces of fabrics here at the UFO-rphanage. They are odd size and shaped pieces, with cutouts, and often no straight edges. The easiest and fastest way to make the most of each piece is to press it, place it on a firm surface, place a plastic template on it and trace around it with a super fine permanent marker. Cut out the shape with a small rotary cutter and ruler or good sewing scissors. These templates will get the most possible standard shapes out of a sheet of 12x18 inch heavy duty template plastic (available at the local fabric chain store; you can cut with heavy scissors). The slightly frosted sheets are nice because you can also use them to fussy cut if need be, and they don't show scratches as easily.

This layout yields two rectangles (a three-piece rail fence block in two sizes) and squares in half-inch increments. These templates make quick work of either fussy cutting fabric or using up those scraps.

Note from Niki: If you find these useful, please consider a small paypal donation to the UFO-rphanage to help keep us online. =) Thank you! (If you don't use PayPal, you can E-mail Nikifor alternate arrangements).

CAUTION: NOT DRAWN TO SCALE

Use this diagram as a guide for laying
out your own accurately drawn shapes

    TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR TEMPLATES:

Please note this drawing is NOT TO SCALE.

Align the outer edges of each block with the outer edge of the plastic.

Allow a very small amount of space between each piece to allow for straight and accurate cutting on the lines you've drawn.

Mark the sizes on the shape in permanent marker before cutting out.

Cover the size and any notes with wide clear tape to prevent rubbing off.

Mark the 1/4" seam allowance in permanent marker to aid in fussy cutting.

Use the same ruler to draw each unit to maintain your accuracy.

Use a small 1/8th inch hole punch to put a hole near a corner of each piece and put them all on a large safety pin for easy storage. You can also store them in a 6x9 inch manilla envelope or a zip bag.

(Note from Niki: This set makes a great gift for a fellow quilter!)
We hope you find this as useful as we do!
