WHAT HAPPENED TO THE UFO-RPHANAGE for QUILTERS? Many of you have asked what happened to the UFO-rphanage for Quilters in the past year. Most of you know that when Niki's husband died at the end of 2006, she struggled greatly to make life work. Eventually, feeling the work the UFO-rphanage did needed to continue despite her own inability to work with it, she handed off the UFO-rphanage's guardianship to a fellow quilter in Ohio. Sadly, that person did nothing to keep up the UFO-rphanage or to maintain the website, e-mail, donations, etc. which Niki has only learned of in the past few weeks. So we have decided to revamp everything, take back the site and the work, and revive an important resource for quilters. All of this will take time as Niki continues to fight breast cancer, so please be patient and contact her directly at the new e-mail address if you have any questions or needs not addressed on the pages here.

We were shocked and deeply hurt to discover things had essentially been dropped altogether instead of given the care we thought they would at the time of the hand off. While it is tempting to hold anger, and to criticize the people involved in the near-demise of the UFO-rphanage, the important thing is to bring it back to the vibrant, caring resource it once was, and can be again. It is important to forgive, to move on and to heal. If you were one of the ones whose e-mail went unanswered, whose package was not acknowledged, etc. we send our humble apology. We thought we had chosen well when we needed to take time to grieve, but were simply mistaken. All we can do now is move forward from here and make things better. We hope you will join us in that effort and make the UFO-rphanage for Quilters better than ever!

To those of you who have supported the UFO-rphanage over the years, thank you, thank you, thank you! We are celebrating our fourteenth anniversary this year and hope the next fourteen years are even better still! If you'd like to encourage Niki in her efforts to revamp and move forward, please do so at the e-mail address shown below or on the sidebar.

One of the changes you will see in coming weeks is to show off the products of the donations. In the past, quilters asked us not to do that as they did not want to be connected to some of the things they sent us, but the attitudes have changed in recent years, where they find it uplifting to see where their donations go and what the finished products look like. It will take time to get some projects done and up for you to see, but it WILL happen, so stay tuned! We are determined to revitalize the work Laura started all those years ago and make a difference in the world with our quilting, one stitch at a time.

Another change you will see is some specific addresses for very specific donations (for example all finished blocks will go to Gladys at the Iowa Farm Report, yarn donations will go to the crochet group at the Integris Cancer Center where Niki receives treatment, etc). We hope this will not discourage you from donating, but instead encourage you as the materials will go where they are most needed and can be put to the best use and move more quickly to their new recipients.

The reconstruction may be slower than we'd like due to Niki's health constraints, but it WILL get done, so please be patient with us and contact us at the new e-mail address if you need anything.
